Tribute to birds is singer's passion
Tribute "Birdie" Mboweni is a songbird with a difference.
She is not afraid to get her tiny fingers dirty, working the soil as she plants trees and clears bare grounds to start food gardening projects in communities.
She also loves and cares for birds; ironically, that's not where her moniker Birdie comes from.
"The name comes from my undergraduate days at TUT [Tshwane University of Technology].
Fellow students called me 'Songbird' because I would sing or hum a tune any time, anywhere.
"With time, the name was shortened to Birdie. This was long before my field work with birds on Dassen Island," recalls Mboweni.
Dassen is an uninhabited island just 10km off the west coast from Yzerfontein in Western Cape.
The entire island is a nature reserve, where Mboweni spent 22 months as a field ranger, part of her environmental studies.
