He was born in Riga, Latvia, during the Nazi occupation.

Jansons' childhood love of music came from his father, Arvīds Jansons, a renowned conductor. He began learning the violin from him and later attended the Emīls Dārziņš Music School in Riga, where he studied alongside future musicians Gidon Kremer and Georgs Pelecis.
